X Original Content Rewards: What Changed and Who Gets Paid

X ended its Creator Revenue Sharing program on September 7, 2026 and replaced it with Original Content Rewards, which opened to applications on September 8. The new program pays for original posts and is built to stop paying accounts that repost other people's work. For clip and repost accounts, that is the headline: the platform's own payout is no longer designed for you.

Below is what changed and when, the eligibility bar as reported, what X counts as original, how the payout rail moved to X Money, and what a clip account should do about it. Every date and number here comes from X's announcements as reported by TechCrunch; where X has not published something, this page says so.

What Changed, and When

The important detail for existing earners: this is an application, not an automatic migration. If you were in Creator Revenue Sharing, check your creator dashboard and apply rather than assuming your status carried over.

Eligibility Requirements

As reported at launch, an account needs all three of these to apply:

• An X Premium subscription, on any of the Premium tiers.
• At least 500 verified followers. Verified followers, not total followers, so a large audience of non-subscribers does not count toward this.
• At least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. Again, impressions from verified accounts are what count.

Meeting the numbers gets you in the door. Staying paid depends on the originality review below, and X has changed thresholds before with little notice, so treat your dashboard as the final word over any article, this one included.

How Payouts Are Calculated (As Published)

X has not published a formula for Original Content Rewards: no public rate per impression, no public weighting. What it has said is the intent. Allegra Jacchia of X put it this way at launch: "Creators should be focused on bringing net new content to the platform instead of maximizing payouts." Read that as a signal that engagement-farming tactics that paid under the old program are the thing the new one is built to stop paying for.

What is published is how the money moves. For US creators, from September 2 onward:

• Payouts go through X Money instead of Stripe, covering both Original Content Rewards and Subscriptions.
• Money is available instantly, replacing a two-week payout cycle that required a $30 minimum balance.
• X Money accounts are held with Cross River Bank, which is FDIC-insured.
• X issues 1099-NEC forms to individuals and collects W-9s from LLCs.

What Counts as Original Content

X's published definition is broader than "you filmed it," but it has a hard edge.

Counts as original: original reporting and analysis, photos and videos you made yourself, memes and graphics you designed, and commentary that adds meaningful original value. Posts that regularly use material made by others need a substantial original contribution on top.

Does not count: posts copied from another account, content downloaded and re-uploaded, and reposts "without meaningful transformation."

The enforcement is aimed at the tricks clip accounts use. The July crackdown specifically covers videos with added watermarks, new intros or other edits meant to disguise the source, plus copied viral text posts. When Grok flags a post as stolen, the monetized impressions go to the original uploader, not the account that reposted it. Accounts that keep trying to get around detection can be removed from the creator program, and X also removes accounts for repeated engagement bait, such as soliciting replies or follows three or more times. Alongside the enforcement, X launched an improved in-app video editor and recorder to push creators toward making their own video.

What It Means for Clip Accounts

If your X account is built on reposting other people's moments, Original Content Rewards is not your income source. A watermarked repost is exactly the case the detection was trained on, and when it gets caught, the money goes to the person you clipped. That is a structural change, not a stricter version of the old rules.

You have three realistic paths:

1. Become the original. Commentary, breakdowns and analysis built around a moment, where your voice is the point, can qualify. A 20-second highlight with a caption on top will not.
2. Clip with permission, for pay outside X's program. Streamer clip programs and brand campaigns pay per view from their own budgets. The rights come with the campaign, so you are not stealing anyone's impressions.

Combining X Rewards With Sponsored Clipping

The two income streams can live on one account if you keep them separate in your head. Original Content Rewards pays from X's pool for posts X judges original. A sponsored campaign pays from a brand's budget for verified views on the posts that brand approves. Neither needs the other.

A workable split looks like this: your own commentary and analysis posts go toward qualifying for X's program, and the sponsored clips and logo placements you run for brands are paid by the campaign. Keep two things in mind. First, a brand campaign does not exempt a post from X's rules; if a sponsored clip is a straight repost of someone else's footage, it will not earn from X's pool either, so plan to be paid for it by the campaign alone. Second, check each campaign's own rules on platforms and formats before posting.
